On our last trip to Door County Wisconsin, my wife and I stayed at the Parkwood Lodge in Fish Creek.
Would I recommend the Parkwood Lodget to someone else? Would we stay there again if we were looking for a hotel or motel in Door County? I think one way to put it is that the Parkwood Lodge is not a “5 star” hotel or resort – the coffee is much better than that. Let me explain what we found out about the Parkwood Lodge -and about the coffee.
We found the Parkwood Lodge while looking online for a place to stay in Door County, WI.
The last time we visited Door County, we stayed at a chain hotel near Green Bay. We decided that this year, we did not want to spend the extra time driving back and fourth and wanted to stay closer to where we would be spending our time during the day. There really aren’t many of the typical well know hotels or motels in Door County itself. This was something that was a bit of a concern to me. You know exactly what you will find if you stay at a chain hotel like Marriott or Best Western or any one of the chain “suites” that all seem to be run by the same big companies. Could the Parkwood Lodge provide similar amenities?
Our internet search for hotels in Door County turned up several options.
We had not made a choice what city (or village) to stay in. The Parkwood Lodge got our attention with a very good price. The rooms looked nice on the website (all the hotels do though) but there was no breakfast included. The free breakfast or sometimes donuts often offered for breakfast at most of the chain motels was one thing we kind of wanted as it saves a bit of time and money when you go out in the morning. This is where the coffee comes in.
Instead of breakfast, the Parkwood Lodge has coffee.
Not just any coffee, but Door County Coffee. Not just in your room, but coffee at the office. More impressively, the Door County Coffee is available all day at the Lodge office. Not just in the morning. It is extremely good coffee too! The coffee at the Parkwood Lodge is absolutely the best coffee I’ve ever had at a hotel. They had several flavors to choose from at the office and we really enjoyed it. They have Door County Tea available too if coffee is not your thing.
We decided to give it a try.
The Parkwood Lodge that is, not the coffee. We had a problem with the online reservation system so I called. I had a couple questions and the person who first answered needed to let someone else answer my questions. It was a pleasure talking to both of them, they were so friendly. She answered my questions and I made the reservation. We chose a king room (with one large king bed). They were sure to ask if we needed a first floor room or if stairs were alright. I’m glad they asked, my wife had recent knee surgery and stairs were really hard for her.
I really liked the Parkwood Lodge’s location.
It is on the norther edge of Fish Creek. Fish Creek just about perfect if you want to visit the rest Door County. Nearly all of Door County is within a short drive (the longest distance probably being Sturgeon Bay in the southern part of Door County). The Parkwood Lodge is literally across Highway 42 from Wisconsin Peninsula State Park for great hiking and biking without needing to take the car. They have bike racks outside the buildings too.
Since we left home after work and had a few hours to drive, we arrived after the Parkwood Lodge office had closed.
This was not a problem. They have an interesting solution which I will leave for them to discuss with others that stay there. While I was a little bit concerned it might not work, everything was just fine and we had the key to our room, slept well, and officially checked in the following morning. I mentioned that this was the first time I had ever seen anything like this done when I checked in. The person I said this to pointed out that this is just one of the advantages of being in a small town instead of a larger city.
It is a bit more like a resort or a park than a hotel.
The Parkwood Lodge is made up of several buildings instead of one large hotel. Parking is always close to your room. There is a fire pit and places to barbecue. There are lots of picnic tables for eating outside and the area has lots of trees. The heated pool and spa (one of the things I look forward to most at any hotel) is located in the office building. They even have books and board games in the office if you need something to do during the evening.
The Parkwood Lodge is the first place I’ve stayed that actually had high speed Wi-Fi in the rooms. We were able to watch YouTube shows with no problems. I think this is very important nowadays. I don’t even remember turning on the TV as my wife and I use the internet for most of our entertainment. The internet was fast and easy to use and I felt comfortable using it (I am very distrustful with the security of most Wi-Fi set ups).
Our room was more than we expected.
We had a king room. We were surprised it had a stove although I don’t think this is a feature of most king rooms. The little kitchenette with sink, and stove also had pots and dishes in it. Our room had two refrigerators. One that did not work in the kitchenette (it’s all one unit, so if they removed the refrigerator they would have to take out the stove too) and a newer refrigerator with a microwave. Other than the old refrigerator, everything was well maintained.
To sum up the room, I’d say it might not be as new as you might expect in a chain hotel, but it was very clean and like I said, well maintained. I’ve been in brand name motels or hotels where the room felt cramped and while clean, made me wonder if I should leave the suitcase on the porch when I got home. Our room at the Parkwood Lodge was large and we felt comfortable. I took the luggage right inside when we got home too.
We really enjoyed our stay at the Parkwood Lodge.
My wife and I both agreed that we would love to stay there next time we go to Door County. If you’re looking for a place to go for a weekend or a few days, I’d recommend Fish Creek, WI and the Parkwood Lodge. Fish Creek is a wonderful area and has easy access to the rest of Door County. The Parkwood Lodge has wonderful small town service.
